Insufficient lactation is a common clinical symptom that a nursing mother’s milk is insufficient to feed the baby or even absence at all. This symptom can occur within a few days of delivery or throughout the duration of the nursing period.
Acupuncture is natural, side-effect free and effective treatment for people suffering from insufficient lactation, especially for those who are looking for natural and drug-free treatments during their pregnant and lactation period.
According to Chinese medicine, milk is transformed from Qi and blood. Both Qi and blood are the material foundation for the functional activities of the body. They originate from food essence and from essential Qi in the Kidney. The production of Qi and blood depends on the functional activities of the Lung, Spleen and Kidney.
There are two major reasons for insufficient lactation, deficiency of Qi and blood and Liver Qi stagnation.
After childbirth a nursing mother need to produce milk from her body’s Qi and blood. Either the weakness of the spleen or profuse loss of Qi and blood during delivery may cause deficiency of Qi and blood. In such cases the main manifestations include: insufficient secretion of milk, no distending pain in the breast, lassitude, exhaustion, dry skin, poor appetite, and loose stools.
Liver Qi stagnation may be caused by emotional factors such as worry, anger, frustration or resentment. Qi stagnation can block the meridians which flow through breasts, obstruct flow of milk, and finally bring on the insufficient lactation. In this case breast milk is being produced normally but is unable to flow out. The main manifestations include: insufficient secretion of milk, distending pain and hardness of the breasts, mental depression, chest distress, hypochondriac distention and pain, irritability and anger in terms of mood.
Insufficient lactation may also be caused by a combination of deficiency of Qi and blood and Liver Qi stagnation.
