Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a common cause of shoulder pain and disability. It is normally because of inflammation where the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thick and contract.

Acupuncture can reduce pain and increase the range of shoulder movement. It is a natural and effective treatment, especially when conventional therapies have been unsuccessful.

In Chinese medicine frozen shoulder can be caused by:

·        The obstruction from an external invasion of wind, cold, dampness. Pain from cold damp obstruction is worse in the morning, exacerbated by cold and damp weather, and improved with heat. It may be accompanied by numbness, swelling and a sense of heaviness.

·        The Qi and/or blood stagnation due to trauma (i.e. lifting, repetitive strain over time, an accident or similar sprain). Pain from stagnation is more severe and stabbing in nature. There is stiffness and tightness in the muscles and it worsens with rest.

·        Insufficiency of Qi and/or blood. Pain that results from deficiency is usually dull, chronic, and improves with rest. It is more common in middle aged and elderly people.

Patients with frozen shoulder will get traditional Chinese acupuncture treatment at Green Point Acupuncture L.L.C.. When frozen shoulder is treated with acupuncture, both local (at the site of pain) and distal (away from the area of pain) points will be used to help resolve the problem. Other treatments might include: Tui Na, cupping, moxibustion, and ear acupuncture.

The length of a treatment varies widely from person to person, depending on the particular symptoms. If frozen shoulder was caused by deficiency of Qi and/or blood, it is necessary to have acupuncture treatment for a longer period of time to assist the body in regaining its normal function. Patients will get healing benefits of acupuncture treatment from experienced Chinese acupuncturists at Green Point Acupuncture L.L.C..
